With this in mind, Clement X proposed to celebrate the <b>1675<\/b> <b>Jubilee<\/b> in the Colosseum, consecrating the monument to the memory of the Christian martyrs. For the occasion, <b>a cross was erected in the center of the arena<\/b> and a <b>wall painting of the city of Jerusalem<\/b> was added to the arch of the so-called Porta Triumphalis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">In the same period, plans to construct a <b>chapel in the center of the arena<\/b> went forward, initially commissioned to Gian Lorenzo Bernini but later drawn up by Carlo Fontana. The idea was to build a <b>monumental circular sanctuary<\/b> on the oval-shaped amphitheater\u2019s long axis, integrated into the existing structure through a portico running along its perimeter. The project never came to fruition, although preparatory drawings have been preserved and models have been made from these documents. In any event, the Colosseum continued to be used as a stone and materials quarry up until the mid-18<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">In <b>1744<\/b>, Pope Benedict XIV issued an edict prohibiting the desecration of the monument and, for the <b>1750 <\/b>Jubilee, he consecrated the arena to the memory of the Passion of Christ and of the Christian martyrs, commissioning the <b>14 shrines of the Stations of the Cross<\/b> along the arena\u2019s perimeter. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":19341,"template":"","collezioni":[86],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere\/20427"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/opere"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere\/20427\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20428,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere\/20427\/revisions\/20428"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/19341"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=20427"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"collezioni","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/collezioni?post=20427"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
