{"id":20434,"date":"2020-12-23T16:07:24","date_gmt":"2020-12-23T15:07:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/?post_type=opere&#038;p=20434"},"modified":"2020-12-23T16:07:24","modified_gmt":"2020-12-23T15:07:24","slug":"the-amphitheaters-statues","status":"publish","type":"opere","link":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/opere\/the-amphitheaters-statues\/","title":{"rendered":"The Amphitheater&#8217;s statues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The reliefs from the tomb of the <i>Haterii<\/i>, dateable to the 1<sup>st<\/sup> century AD and unearthed in 1848 on the ancient Via Labicana, together with a number of coins, give us the image of an amphitheater decorated with numerous statues of various types, now mostly lost.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">A total of 156 statues of gods, heroes and demigods were originally located in the outer arcades of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 3<sup>rd<\/sup> tiers<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-US\">. Certain prominent figures of Roman society enjoyed the privilege of having their portrait displayed on the Colosseum\u2019s 1<sup>st<\/sup> tier, while the portraits of the imperial family adorned the imperial box.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">At least three statues were dedicated to the Roman prefect <i>Decius Marius Venantius Basilius<\/i>, who restored the amphitheater at his own expense in the 5<sup>th<\/sup> century AD after a violent earthquake.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The 2008 excavations conducted in the amphitheater yielded a fragmentary horse statue which is now on display in front of the north entrance on the Colosseum\u2019s 1<sup>st<\/sup> tier. Although studies are still in progress, it seems probable that this too was created as part of the amphitheater\u2019s original statuary decoration.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":18305,"template":"","collezioni":[86],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere\/20434"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/opere"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere\/20434\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":20435,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/opere\/20434\/revisions\/20435"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/18305"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=20434"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"collezioni","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/colosseo.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/collezioni?post=20434"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
