Portrait of a young princess

This beautiful portrait of a young princess in Greek marble, found at the Palatine Stadium in 1893, is a masterpiece of Roman physiognomic sculpture. It stands out for the sensitivity with which the artist, perhaps from the Attic school, succeeded in rendering the delicate complexion of the face of this big-eyed girl, with her hair arranged in broad locks on her forehead and gathered into a bun at the back of her head. For a long time the young woman was identified as Faustina Minor, the wife of Marcus Aurelius, but the portrait is more likely to represent the features of one of the granddaughters of the philosopher emperor (161–180 AD). Exhibited in the Palatine Museum.
