The large set of wings in white Greek marble was found in 2008, in three pieces, in a Renaissance-era spoliation pit (a pit from which blocks of stone were taken to build new foundations) in the central cryptoporticus of the Domus Tiberiana. With all likelihood the wings belonged to a pair of winged Victories that would have stood roughly two meters high. The sculptural modelling of the plumage is extraordinary: feathers fan out with great realism and great attention is paid to their various shapes, lengths and positions. The work is an example of hitherto unparalleled quality in the repertoire of Roman art and should thus be dated to the Augustan age. On display at the Palatine Museum.
