Paths outside the PArCo – Distant but united by history
The PArCo is happy to launch the project “Paths outside the PArCo – Distant but united by history“, which aims to help Roman citizens and all of our visitors to discover the deep, extremely interesting links that connect monuments in the PArCo to other monuments located throughout the surrounding region.
The project involves various Institutes of the Ministry of Culture operational throughout the Lazio region (including the Regional Directorate of Museums, the Barberini and Corsini National Galleries, the National Roman Museum, the Archaeological Parks of Appia Antica and Ostia Antica), the Capitoline Rome Superintendence for Cultural Heritage, the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei with the Villa Farnesina, the towns of Cori and Priverno and the Roffredo Caetani Foundation, all of which joined the initiative with great enthusiasm.
The project will use text and images (posted on the social media of the PArCo and the institutions involved) to tell the story of each link that unites a monument or artifact in the PArCo with its “twin” located in one of the participating cultural sites. The links that bind these monuments to one another will be of various types: chronological, typological, thematic, stylistic, iconographic, architectural, historical.
Thus the Dioscuri of Cori will communicate with the Dioscuri of the temple overlooking the Roman Forum; we’ll discover that the Magna Mater is worshiped both on the Palatine Hill and in Ostia; we’ll visit the urban and suburban residences of Augustus’s wife Livia, between the Palatine Hill and Prima Porta, and we’ll go as far as Priverno; we’ll follow the tracks of the Palladium from Sperlonga to Rome; we’ll walk in the stadium of Domitian on the Palatine and find out that the emperor had also built another stadium which is now in Piazza Navona; we’ll discover the links between the Church of Santa Maria Nova in the Roman Forum and the estate of the same name in the Parco dell’Appia; we’ll admire the paintings of Santa Maria Antiqua and those of Santa Maria Maggiore in the Garden of Ninfa; finally, arriving up to the Renaissance and the Baroque, we’ll pass from the Barberini Vineyard on the Palatine to Palazzo Barberini, we’ll discover the links between the Loggia Mattei and the Villa Farnesina, and we’ll follow the history of the Farnese family from the gardens on the Palatine to their palace in Caprarola.
Starting on April 27, and continuing for fourteen Tuesdays, this project will link the PArCo to the monuments and places of Rome and Lazio in a virtual tour route and itinerary. Conceived during the pandemic, this tour throughout Rome and environs will finally be able to become reality thanks to the reopening of museums and cultural sites scheduled to start from 26 April 2021.
