The Invisible Deposits Conference, curated by Massimo Osanna, Alfonsina Russo, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, Roberta Alteri, stems from the need to share national and international experiences in the field of the study, cataloguing and enhancement of archaeological artefacts and aims to bring together the knowledge management and activities carried out by individual Institutes regarding the cultural heritage stored in deposits and museums.
An essential aspect in cataloguing materials is therefore the knowledge of the entire area of provenance, which makes it possible to attempt the definition of the events and possible changes of use of the finds, contextualizing them in the broader historical, socio-economic, architectural, decorative and topographical framework. The inventorying of movable heritage is in fact aimed not only at its classification and protection, but also at study and scientific research so as to give voice to artefacts reduced to the state of disiecta membra or deprived of their stratigraphy and to bring them back to their original context. Adequate organisation and management of the movable heritage and the deposits in which it is stored is a starting and finishing point for a precise knowledge of the historical collections and for the realisation of museum layout projects with the creation of exhibition itineraries in which communication to the public can and must also be achieved through the use of new multimedia technologies. During the days of the Conference, organised in four sessions, it will be possible to share and discuss study and inventorying activities with exemplary national and international cases illustrating the method adopted for the reconstruction of the provenance of artefacts and for the definition of enhancement plans, presenting projects for the recovery of archaeological materials in storage with the creation of reasoned, themed deposits accessible to the public through specific itineraries. A session will be devoted to the tools and methods of cataloguing and digitisation, the need for preventive training in the field of inventories, and the methodological approach in the field of enhancement and dissemination. A further focus will also be devoted to the definition of integrated digital cataloguing, management and study systems for cultural heritage.
